Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s much-awaited final film, Jana Nayagan, has made a powerful debut at the global box office, collecting an impressive ₹78.27 crore worldwide gross on its opening day. Released on July 23, the film arrived in theatres after facing delays related to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the film’s opening numbers highlight Vijay’s unmatched fan following and star power.
According to early box office estimates, Jana Nayagan earned ₹41 crore net across India on Day 1. The film’s domestic gross reached ₹48.27 crore, while overseas markets contributed another ₹30 crore, taking the worldwide total to ₹78.27 crore gross. Industry experts believe the strong opening reflects the emotional connection fans have with Vijay as he prepares to step away from acting and focus entirely on his political career.
The Tamil version dominated collections with ₹36.5 crore from 7,585 shows, while the Telugu version collected ₹2.75 crore across 1,502 shows. The Hindi version added ₹1.75 crore from 3,980 shows, bringing the total India net collection to ₹41 crore from 13,067 shows nationwide.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani. While audiences praised Vijay’s screen presence, performance, and Anirudh Ravichander’s energetic background score, some viewers felt the screenplay could have been stronger. Even so, the emotional significance of Vijay’s farewell film has attracted massive crowds to theatres.
Although the makers have not officially revealed the production budget, reports estimate that Jana Nayagan was made on a budget ranging between ₹300 crore and ₹500 crore. To recover its investment and achieve blockbuster status, the film will need to maintain strong collections over its opening weekend and continue performing steadily in the coming weeks.
Trade analysts are now closely watching the film’s weekend performance, as positive word-of-mouth and Vijay’s loyal fan base could help sustain its momentum. With one of the biggest openings of the year, Jana Nayagan has already established itself as a major box office event and a memorable farewell to one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars.
