Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s much-awaited farewell film Jana Nayagan witnessed a sharp decline at the box office on its second day despite opening strongly. Released on July 23 after months of delay due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the film collected ₹21.15 crore net in India on Day 2, registering a 50.5% drop from its opening-day collection of ₹42.70 crore.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan has now earned ₹63.85 crore net in India within two days, while its India gross collection stands at approximately ₹75 crore. The film has also performed well overseas, collecting around ₹10 crore gross on Day 2, taking its international total to ₹37.5 crore. Its worldwide gross collection has now reached an impressive ₹112.5 crore.
The Tamil version continued to dominate the film’s earnings, contributing ₹17.95 crore on Day 2. The Hindi dubbed version added ₹1.85 crore, while the Telugu version collected ₹1.35 crore, reflecting Vijay’s strong fan base across multiple markets.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While Vijay’s performance, screen presence, and Anirudh Ravichander’s music have been widely praised, some viewers have expressed disappointment with the screenplay and narrative. Nevertheless, the film has maintained a solid theatrical run thanks to Vijay’s massive popularity and the emotional significance of what has been billed as his final film before focusing on politics.
Although the makers have not officially disclosed the production cost, reports estimate the film’s budget to be between ₹300 crore and ₹500 crore. Despite the healthy worldwide opening, trade analysts believe the film will need to sustain strong collections over the coming weeks to recover its massive investment and achieve commercial success.
