Disappointment hit fans early on Thursday, May 14, 2026, as the highly anticipated Tamil action-drama Karuppu saw its 9 AM premiere shows cancelled across the state.

Despite receiving special permission for early morning screenings from the newly elected Chief Minister Vijay, the film failed to hit the silver screen on schedule. Directed by RJ Balaji and starring the powerhouse duo of Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the movie was slated for a massive worldwide release today, but last-minute hurdles have left thousands of fans waiting outside locked theater gates.

The producer of the film, SR Prabhu, confirmed the news on social media, citing “unavoidable reasons” for the cancellation and offering a sincere apology to the audience. While the official statement remained vague, industry insiders suggest that a last-minute financial “KDM” (Key Delivery Message) issue involving overseas distributors and local lenders caused the stalemate. This is a common but frustrating hurdle in high-budget Kollywood releases, where late-night negotiations often spill into the early morning of the release day.
RJ Balaji Urges Fans to Keep Faith
Director RJ Balaji also addressed the situation on his X handle, sounding emotional yet hopeful. He reminded fans that the project has been in the making for 32 months and has faced numerous obstacles to get to the finish line. “Producers are doing their best to solve the hurdles. This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through. I have complete faith,” Balaji shared, urging fans to stay patient as the team works to resume screenings by the afternoon or evening sessions.
Political Backdrop and Financial Woes
The cancellation comes as a surprise given that the film had the explicit backing of the state government. CM Vijay had recently approved special 9 AM shows specifically for Karuppu and Suriya’s massive fanbase, a move that was seen as a boost for the Tamil film industry. However, administrative permissions cannot override private financial settlements, which seem to be the primary cause of the delay.
As of now, advance booking refunds are being processed at several multiplexes, while single-screen theaters are asking fans to hold onto their tickets for later shows. The film, which marks the reunion of Suriya and Trisha after years, carries immense expectations, and the trade expects it to pick up momentum once the “red tape” is cleared.
