The legendary “Showman” of Bollywood, Subhash Ghai, has officially confirmed that while the iconic character Ballu Balaram is returning to the silver screen, he will not be the one behind the camera. Following Sanjay Dutt’s high-octane announcement of the Khalnayak sequel on April 24, 2026, Ghai clarified his new role in the production.

Passing the Torch

At 80 years old, Subhash Ghai believes the time is right for a fresh perspective to lead the franchise. However, his fingerprints will remain all over the project:

  • Creative Producer: Ghai will serve as a mentor and creative producer, ensuring the sequel maintains the spirit of the 1993 original.
  • The Concept: The story and concept for the sequel were actually provided by Ghai himself, fulfilling a long-standing request from Sanjay Dutt.
  • The Cameo: In a nod to his fans and his bond with “Sanju,” Ghai has agreed to make a special appearance on screen, similar to his memorable cameo in Om Shanti Om.

Sanjay Dutt’s Passion Project

The sequel isn’t just a business move for Sanjay Dutt; it’s a personal mission.

  • Jailhouse Inspiration: Dutt revealed that the idea for the sequel took shape during his time in prison, where he even wrote to Ghai expressing his desire to bring Ballu back.
  • Actor-Producer: Following Ghai’s advice, Dutt is spearheading the project under his own production banner and is currently on the hunt for a director who can do justice to the cult classic.

Legacy of the Original Khalnayak (1993)

The original film remains a landmark in Indian cinema for several reasons:

  • Box Office Power: It was the second-highest-grossing film of 1993.
  • Cultural Impact: From the controversial yet chart-busting “Choli Ke Peeche” to Dutt’s anti-hero archetype, the film defined an era.
  • Real-Life Drama: The film’s release famously coincided with Sanjay Dutt’s real-life legal battles, blending his off-screen persona with the “Khalnayak” (Villain) image in the public eye.

Subhash Ghai’s Take: “I don’t want to remake my own film… I told Sanju, ‘If you are so keen, why don’t you produce it yourself.’ I am sure he will find the right director soon.”
