Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja passed away on Wednesday due to age-related health complications. He was 84.
Bharathiraja breathed his last at his residence in Chennai, bringing an end to a remarkable career that transformed Tamil cinema and inspired generations of filmmakers.
The news of his demise was confirmed by the Tamil Film Producers Council, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its most respected members and former presidents.
Tamil Film Industry Mourns a Cinema Legend
Tributes poured in from across the film industry soon after the news became public.
Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar expressed her grief in a heartfelt message on social media. She described Bharathiraja as one of the most respected filmmakers in Tamil cinema and said his films would continue to serve as a school of filmmaking for future generations.
Khushbu also recalled her personal bond with the director and said she would always cherish the memories she shared with him. According to her, Bharathiraja leaves behind a legacy that every cinema lover will remember for years to come.
Health Issues Had Troubled Him for Months
Bharathiraja had been facing health challenges for a considerable period.
In December last year, he was admitted to a hospital because of respiratory complications. His health reportedly remained fragile in the following months.
Earlier this year, he was hospitalized again after his condition worsened. However, he recovered sufficiently to be discharged in April. Despite medical care and treatment, his health continued to decline due to age-related complications.
The Visionary Who Changed Tamil Cinema
Bharathiraja is widely regarded as one of the most influential directors in the history of Tamil cinema. He revolutionized storytelling by bringing realistic rural narratives to the big screen at a time when urban-centered stories dominated the industry.
His films often highlighted village life, human relationships and social realities. As a result, he earned immense respect from audiences and critics alike.
His breakthrough film, 16 Vayathinile, became a landmark in Tamil cinema and established him as a visionary filmmaker.

His final directorial work was a segment in the anthology series Modern Love Chennai. Meanwhile, his last on-screen appearance came in Thudarum, which starred Mohanlal and Shobana.
Family and Legacy
Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, Chandraleela, and daughter, Janani.
The filmmaker had suffered a personal tragedy in 2025 when his son, Manoj Bharathiraja, passed away.
