Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s efforts to protect the privacy of their children have long been a defining part of their life outside the British royal family. However, Meghan’s latest social media posts featuring Princess Lilibet have reignited discussions about how much of their family life the couple is willing to share publicly.
The Duchess of Sussex recently posted two previously unseen photographs to mark Princess Lilibet’s birthday, offering followers a rare glimpse into the family’s life in California. While the images were warmly received by many fans, they have also prompted fresh debate about the couple’s approach to their children’s privacy.
According to royal commentator Duncan Larcombe, the posts may have left Prince Harry feeling conflicted, given his long-standing concerns about the impact of public exposure on young children.
Speaking to the Mirror, Larcombe suggested that the Duke of Sussex could be uncomfortable with the growing visibility of Archie and Lilibet on social media.
“I’m sure her accusers will say she’s exploiting the children,” Larcombe said. “They will point to the contradiction between advocating for children’s privacy and then sharing pictures of her own children publicly.”
He added that while the images appear carefully curated, critics may interpret them as part of Meghan’s broader public profile.
Harry’s Long-Standing Concerns About Privacy
Prince Harry has repeatedly spoken about the challenges he faced growing up under intense media scrutiny as a member of the royal family. Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and relocating to the United States with Meghan, the couple has consistently emphasized their desire to provide a more private upbringing for their children.
Larcombe believes that Harry’s personal experiences could make him particularly sensitive to decisions involving public exposure of Archie and Lilibet.
“He knows what it’s like being a child in the public eye, and he has often indicated that he doesn’t want the same experience for his own children,” Larcombe said.
The royal expert suggested that while Harry may support Meghan’s decisions publicly, he could still have reservations about increasing the family’s visibility online.
Meghan and Harry’s Evolving Approach
Although the Sussexes have generally kept their children away from public attention, Meghan has occasionally shared carefully selected family moments through social media, podcasts and special occasions.
The latest birthday tribute to Lilibet is viewed by some royal observers as another step toward offering the public more insight into their family life, while still maintaining boundaries around their children’s privacy.
Larcombe believes the couple may gradually become more comfortable sharing family content in the future.
“They are growing up, and perhaps Harry and Meghan are finding a balance between privacy and allowing supporters to share in important milestones,” he noted.
Comparison With William and Kate’s Children
The discussion has also drawn comparisons with the children of Prince William and Princess Kate, who frequently appear at major royal events and public engagements.
However, Larcombe argued that the situations are fundamentally different. As future heir to the British throne, Prince George’s public role is largely unavoidable, while Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are also growing up within the royal spotlight.
Harry and Meghan, on the other hand, have greater freedom to determine how visible Archie and Lilibet will be.
“William and Kate’s children are being prepared for future public responsibilities,” Larcombe said. “Harry and Meghan have more flexibility and could choose to keep their children almost entirely out of the public eye if they wished.”
A Sign of Things to Come?
The latest photographs have once again highlighted the delicate balance the Sussexes face between maintaining privacy and sharing personal moments with supporters.
While neither Harry nor Meghan has indicated any major shift in their approach, some royal commentators believe the recent posts could signal a gradual change in how much of their family life they are willing to reveal.
For now, the images remain a rare glimpse into the lives of Archie and Lilibet, children who have largely been kept away from the public spotlight despite intense global interest in the Sussex family.
