Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar may have shattered box office records worldwide, but the film has failed to make an impact in Japan. Released in Japanese theatres on July 10, 2026, the action drama recorded a weak opening despite an extensive promotional campaign ahead of its release.

According to trade reports, the film sold only around 900 tickets on its first day and failed to secure a place among Japan’s top 25 films during its opening weekend.

Slow opening despite wide release

The film began its Japanese run across 57 locations, recording 449 admissions by 2 p.m. on opening day.

However, the momentum did not improve during the evening shows. By the end of the day, Dhurandhar had managed only 900 admissions, even after expanding to 80 locations.

The figures fell well below expectations, especially considering the strong promotional efforts made before the release.

Misses India’s top 10 opening records in Japan

The opening-day performance also kept Dhurandhar out of the list of the top 10 biggest Indian film openers in Japan.

To enter the list, the film needed to surpass 1,300 admissions, a record currently held by Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, which occupies the tenth spot.

Interestingly, Pushpa 2 had also failed to make it into the top 10 during its release in Japan.

Top Indian opening-day admissions in Japan

  1. RRR – 8,230 admissions
  2. Saaho
  3. Kalki 2898 AD
  4. Pathaan
  5. Salaar
  6. Jawan
  7. Rangasthalam
  8. Devara

  10. Tiger 3 – 1,300 admissions

With only 900 admissions, Dhurandhar remained outside this list.

A global blockbuster despite Japan setback

Although its Japanese debut disappointed, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has been a massive commercial success across the world.

The film has reportedly earned ₹1,813 crore worldwide, taking the combined earnings of the Dhurandhar franchise to ₹3,019.35 crore.

With this achievement, the franchise has become the first Indian film series to cross the ₹3,000 crore mark at the global box office.

For comparison:

  • Dhurandhar franchise – ₹3,019.35 crore
  • Baahubali franchise – ₹2,438 crore
  • Pushpa franchise – ₹2,092.20 crore

The film has also become the highest-grossing Indian film without contributions from China and Gulf countries, highlighting its strong performance in several international markets.

The franchise continues to break records

The first Dhurandhar film released in December 2025 and turned into a blockbuster by earning more than ₹1,307 crore worldwide.

Its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, has gone even further, becoming the second highest-grossing Indian film of all time, behind Dangal, with global collections of ₹1,813 crore.

Cast and crew

The Dhurandhar franchise is written and directed by Aditya Dhar and produced by Lokesh Dhar and Jyoti Deshpande under the banners of Jio Studios and B62 Studios.

The film features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, and Danish Pandor in key roles.

While the Japanese release has started on a disappointing note, the film’s outstanding global box office performance continues to cement its place among the biggest commercial successes in Indian cinema.
