Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have provided a fresh update on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe while discussing their upcoming projects, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Speaking at Reality TV Summit UK during SXSW London, the Russo brothers appeared alongside AGBO partner Donald Mustard, who is also collaborating on the upcoming Avengers films.
The filmmakers confirmed that work is progressing on both projects. Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production, while Avengers: Secret Wars has entered pre-production ahead of their planned theatrical releases in December 2026 and December 2027.
Russo Brothers Focused on Completing a New Avengers Story
During the discussion, Anthony Russo explained that the two upcoming Avengers films are being developed as one connected narrative.
According to him, the current goal is to deliver a complete story across both movies rather than plan additional Marvel projects beyond them.
Reflecting on their previous Marvel journey, Russo recalled that the team originally viewed Avengers: Endgame as the conclusion of a major story arc that began with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
He said that Doomsday and Secret Wars are designed to work together and create a full narrative experience for audiences.
At the same time, he did not completely rule out future collaborations with Marvel Studios.
Future Marvel Projects Remain a Possibility
While the directors currently have no additional Avengers films planned, they acknowledged that future partnerships with Marvel could happen.
Anthony Russo described the relationship between their production company AGBO and Marvel Studios as highly successful and beneficial for both sides.
He noted that some of their most celebrated work has come through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and emphasized the strong creative relationship they have built over the years.
Joe Russo added a humorous response when asked about returning after Secret Wars.
He joked that they would decide after seeing how they look in photographs in 2028.
Production Work Continues on Avengers: Doomsday
Joe Russo also shared details about the current production schedule.
He revealed that the team is still working on Avengers: Doomsday and expects to continue refining the film until late 2026.
According to Russo, production on Secret Wars is already moving forward simultaneously, demonstrating the studio’s ambitious approach to developing the two interconnected films.
The directors explained that handling multiple projects at the same time has become a normal part of their creative process.
Interactive Experiences Being Developed
One of the most interesting announcements from the event came from Donald Mustard, the former Chief Creative Officer of Epic Games and a key creative force behind Fortnite.
Mustard confirmed that interactive elements connected to Avengers: Doomsday are currently being developed.
Although he did not reveal specific details, he said AGBO and Marvel are exploring new ways to combine storytelling with interactive experiences.
He described the collaboration as an exciting partnership focused on expanding how audiences engage with stories beyond traditional movies.
Russo Brothers See Interactive Entertainment Growing
Joe Russo expressed strong confidence in the future of interactive storytelling.
He believes the gap between traditional film and interactive entertainment will continue to shrink in the coming years.
As an example, Russo pointed to the success of Backrooms, which evolved from an internet-created mythology into a major film project.
According to him, the journey of Backrooms demonstrates how stories can move across different platforms and formats while attracting large audiences.
He suggested that future entertainment experiences may increasingly blend film, gaming, and interactive elements.
What Comes Next for Marvel Fans?
For now, the Russo brothers remain focused on delivering the next chapter of the Avengers saga.
With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars forming a connected two-part story, Marvel fans can expect a major cinematic event over the next two years.
Although no plans beyond Secret Wars have been announced, the directors have made it clear that another Marvel collaboration remains possible in the future.
