A dark cloud of grief has enveloped the Indian film industry following the passing of legendary filmmaker and veteran actor Bharathirajaa. Fondly revered as Iyakkunar Imayam (The Pinnacle of Directors), the master storyteller breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at his residence in Neelangarai, Chennai.

At 84, the veteran creator succumbed to prolonged age-related health issues and respiratory complications. The devastating news has plunged millions of film lovers, actors, and technocrats across the nation into a state of deep mourning.
Upon hearing the news, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay arrived at the Neelangarai residence of the late filmmaker to pay his last respects. The Chief Minister offered a floral tribute to the mortal remains and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family members, recognizing Bharathirajaa’s massive, multi-decade contribution to the cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu.
The veteran director had been dealing with a delicate physical phase over the past year, a struggle compounded by a severe personal tragedy in early 2025 when his son, actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja, suddenly passed away due to a cardiac arrest.
The tragic demise has triggered a massive wave of emotional tributes from across the film fraternity. Renowned actress Revathi, who was famously introduced by the icon, shared an emotional note stating that he was the sole reason she stands as an actor today. Heartfelt statements poured in from actors Gautami Tadimalla, Shanthanu, and music composer G.V. Prakash Kumar, all hailing him as a visionary who gifted Tamil cinema its true soul. Famous for his iconic opening signature greeting line, “En Iniya Tamil Makkale” (My sweet Tamil people), Bharathirajaa revolutionized commercial Indian cinema in the late 1970s by aggressively breaking away from artificial, studio-bound sets and taking cameras into the rustic, authentic heartlands of rural Tamil Nadu.
Leaving behind an unmatched legacy of 44 directorial ventures, the Padma Shri recipient’s stellar career began with the landmark cult-classic 16 Vayathinile (1977), a path-breaking movie that redefined the careers of Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi.
Over five decades, the winner of six National Film Awards delivered cinema milestones like Mudhal Mariyadhai, Mann Vasanai, Pudhumai Penn, Vedham Pudhithu, and Kizhakku Cheemaiyile. He later established himself as an equally brilliant actor in modern hits like Aayutha Ezhuthu, Maanaadu, Thiruchitrambalam, and Maharaja. The final rites of the cinematic genius are expected to take place with state honors.
