King George’s Medical University has launched a high-level probe into allegations that multiple heart stents were implanted in patients

June 10, 2026: A major controversy has erupted at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow after allegations surfaced that multiple heart stents may have been implanted in patients to improperly claim benefits under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. In response, the university administration has constituted a special inquiry committee to investigate the matter and examine whether medical procedures were carried out according to established guidelines.

The probe was initiated after reports suggested that some cardiac patients were fitted with as many as five stents during treatment. Authorities are reviewing angioplasty records, stent implantation data, patient files, angiography reports, hospital admission documents and Ayushman Bharat payment claims from the past year. Investigators are also examining cases involving repeated admissions and multiple procedures, along with allegations of incomplete medical documentation.

As the inquiry expanded, the university cancelled the leave of doctors and staff connected to the cases and directed them to remain available for questioning. Action has reportedly been initiated against certain outsourced employees, while steps are being taken to blacklist a private company linked to the controversy. KGMU has also removed Ayushman Mitras handling cardiac cases and replaced them with regular staff as authorities continue to investigate possible violations and financial irregularities.
