Nearly two decades after the original film redefined fashion in cinema, the legendary Meryl Streep has opened up about the painstaking process of bringing The Devil Wears Prada 2 to life.

In a high-profile interaction with filmmaker Karan Johar during the film’s global press tour in Tokyo, Streep revealed that discussions for the sequel actually began as early as three years after the first film’s 2006 release.

According to Streep, while the original’s massive cultural impact was immediate, finding the “right” story took much longer. “The writer, Lauren Weisberger, began talking about a sequel three years after because it was such a hit that nobody in Hollywood could ignore,” Streep told Johar. However, she emphasized that the team waited for a concept that truly reflected the changing times. The sequel, set to hit Indian theaters on May 1, 2026, finally finds its footing by exploring the modern crisis in journalism and traditional publishing.

Navigating “Uncharted Waters”

The upcoming film features a matured Miranda Priestly attempting to maintain the dominance of Runway Magazine in an era of digital decline and shifting advertising power. Streep noted that the delay in production was necessary to “place these characters in jeopardy” authentically. “Miranda is navigating uncharted waters, like we all are,” she explained, hinting at a high-stakes rivalry with Emily Blunt’s character, who has transitioned into a powerful executive at a luxury conglomerate.

The conversation between Streep and Johar—who admitted to being “singularly obsessed” with the 2006 original—offered fans a rare look at the chemistry between Bollywood and Hollywood’s fashion-forward elite. Johar, whose own flamboyant style was complimented by Streep during their meet, confessed he has been “channelling Miranda Priestly” in his own professional life for years.

A Star-Studded Return to the Runway

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites the powerhouse trio of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt, alongside Stanley Tucci. The sequel also introduces an impressive ensemble cast including:

  • Kenneth Branagh (playing Miranda’s new husband)
  • Simone Ashley (Bridgerton star playing a new fashion assistant)
  • Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and B.J. Novak

Directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna, the film is positioned to be the cinematic event of the summer, with a world premiere livestream scheduled for April 20 at Lincoln Center in New York.
