Senior citizens without a health insurance policy can still receive tax relief on medical expenses under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. The provision allows eligible resident senior citizens to claim a deduction of up to ₹50,000 for medical expenditure incurred during the financial year.

While Section 80D is commonly associated with deductions on health insurance premiums, it also provides benefits to senior citizens who do not have medical insurance coverage. The same benefit is available to taxpayers who bear medical expenses for their uninsured senior citizen parents.

The deduction is available only for actual medical expenses paid during the financial year and is limited to a maximum of ₹50,000. The limit remains the same for both senior citizens aged 60 years or above and very senior citizens aged 80 years or above.

For instance, if a 68-year-old resident senior citizen without health insurance spends ₹42,000 on medical treatment in a financial year, the entire amount can be claimed as a deduction under Section 80D. However, if the medical expenses total ₹70,000, the deduction will be restricted to ₹50,000.

To claim this benefit, certain conditions must be fulfilled. The individual receiving medical treatment must be a resident Indian senior citizen, generally aged 60 years or above, and should not have an active health insurance policy during that financial year.

If the senior citizen pays their own medical bills, they can claim the deduction in their own income tax return. In cases where children pay medical expenses for their uninsured senior citizen parents, the child can claim the deduction, subject to the ₹50,000 limit.

However, the same medical bill cannot be claimed multiple times by different taxpayers. If separate individuals have genuinely paid separate portions of medical expenses, each person can claim a deduction only for the amount actually paid by them.

The provision offers important tax relief for elderly individuals who may not have health insurance coverage and helps reduce the financial burden of medical costs.
