Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of weakening democratic institutions, manipulating the electoral process

June 12, 2026: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that the ruling party was weakening democratic institutions and attempting to influence future elections through measures such as delimitation and women’s reservation. Speaking in Kasganj, Yadav claimed that the BJP wanted to redesign parliamentary constituencies in a way that would make it difficult for opposition leaders to win elections. He warned that if alleged electoral irregularities seen in other states were repeated in Uttar Pradesh, the future of democratic elections could be at risk.

Criticising the BJP-led governments at both the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav said regions like Etah and Kasganj had been left behind in terms of development. He claimed that farmers were unhappy, inflation was hurting common people and the much-publicised “double-engine government” had failed to deliver meaningful progress. Taking a swipe at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Yadav remarked that it was the Chief Minister who lacked political identity before 2017, not Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections, Yadav described them as a fight to protect democracy and constitutional values. He accused the BJP of neglecting public welfare, allowing corruption to flourish and making education more expensive through rising fees. The SP chief also attacked the Centre over rising fuel, fertilizer and cooking gas prices, saying inflation was the BJP government’s biggest achievement over the past 12 years. He urged party workers and PDA supporters to remain united, claiming that only the Samajwadi Party could bring change and safeguard the future of Uttar Pradesh.
