AAP, Congress and SAD accused Chandigarh BJP chief Jatinder Pal Malhotra of insulting Punjabis

June 19, 2026: A political controversy erupted in Chandigarh after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) accused Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra of making an anti-Punjabi remark. AAP workers staged a protest outside the BJP office, raised slogans against the party, and burned an effigy of the BJP leader. Protesters alleged that Malhotra’s comments insulted the Punjabi community and demanded action from the BJP.

AAP leaders said Punjabis have made immense contributions to the nation through their sacrifices, service on the borders, and role in ensuring food security. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also criticized the remarks, stating that Punjabis are emotional but not foolish, and that standing up for self-respect and rights is a defining trait of the community. He demanded an apology from the BJP, while SAD leaders also called for accountability and a public clarification.

Responding to the criticism, Jatinder Pal Malhotra denied that his remarks were aimed at Punjabis and accused rival parties of circulating edited video clips to create controversy. He clarified that he was referring to himself during a sports event and not making any comment about the Punjabi community. However, he added that if anyone’s sentiments were hurt by his words, he regretted the misunderstanding and expressed his apology.
