The Lalita Gautam murder case in Meerut has triggered a major political controversy and law-and-order debate in Uttar Pradesh after protests continued even after the main accused was arrested. According to police, the accused was taken into custody within 24 hours of the incident and later sent to judicial custody.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) and the state's Home Secretary over allegations that police used excessive force during a protest in Meerut.
