A 17-year-old NEET aspirant died by suicide in Ahmedabad, adding to growing concerns over the pressure

June 18, 2026: A 17-year-old student preparing for the NEET examination died by suicide in Ahmedabad’s New Ranip area in the early hours of June 17. According to police, the teenager allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of his residential building after cutting through the balcony grill attached to his bedroom. A security guard witnessed the incident and alerted residents, while the student was declared dead at the scene. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

During the preliminary investigation, police found that the student was preparing for NEET and was scheduled to appear for a re-test. However, family members told investigators that he had not expressed anxiety about the examination and believed his earlier attempt had gone well. Authorities have seized his laptop and mobile phone and will question friends and relatives to determine the circumstances that may have led to the incident.

The tragedy comes amid a series of reported deaths involving NEET aspirants across India. Recent cases in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu have renewed concerns about the intense pressure associated with competitive entrance exams. Reacting to the incidents, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke criticised the government on social media and questioned the handling of issues surrounding NEET. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad police have stated that the exact reason behind the student’s death remains under investigation.
