Top hospital raises medical concerns as Supreme Court stresses informed consent

April 30, 2026: All India Institute of Medical Sciences has filed a curative plea in the Supreme Court of India challenging its earlier decision that allowed a 15-year-old girl to terminate her 30-week pregnancy. The institute argued that proceeding with the termination at such an advanced stage may not be in the best interest of the minor, citing serious medical concerns.

AIIMS told the court that late-term termination could expose the young mother to significant physical and psychological risks, potentially leading to long-term complications. The plea seeks reconsideration of the earlier order, emphasising the complexity and sensitivity of the case.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court directed AIIMS to counsel the girl’s parents about the medical and emotional implications involved. The court also underscored that the final decision should rest with the minor, highlighting the importance of informed consent in matters involving personal health and autonomy.
