An Air India passenger who damaged an aircraft window pane during a Chandigarh-Delhi flight has been referred to the airline’s internal committee

June 9, 2026: An Air India passenger may face a flying ban after allegedly damaging the inner window pane of a flight operating from Chandigarh to Delhi on June 7. The incident occurred aboard flight AI1879 as the aircraft was preparing to land at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to officials, the passenger ignored repeated warnings from the cabin crew and continued damaging the non-structural scratch pane designed to protect the aircraft’s critical window layers.

Air India confirmed that the flight landed safely and that passenger safety was never compromised. The airline said the cockpit crew followed standard operating procedures and alerted security personnel at Delhi airport. Officials stated that the passenger behaved aggressively during the flight but later apologised after being handed over to security authorities. In line with civil aviation regulations, the case has now been referred to the airline’s internal committee, which will determine whether the passenger should be classified as unruly and placed on the no-fly list.

The situation took another turn when the passenger reportedly escaped from police escort at Terminal 3 of Delhi airport the following morning. He was quickly apprehended by CISF personnel and returned to the police. During the inquiry, his family informed authorities that he was undergoing treatment for mental illness and requested permission for him to travel to Patna. However, Air India declined to allow further travel while proceedings were underway. After completing the required formalities, the passenger was released into the custody of his parents.
