The Assam State Disaster Management Authority will soon implement the Cell Broadcast System

June 4, 2026: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has announced plans to implement the Cell Broadcast System (CBS) across the state in the coming days. Developed by C-DOT under the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the system allows authorities to send instant, location-specific emergency alerts directly to mobile phones within affected areas. Assam was excluded from the nationwide CBS test conducted in May due to the Model Code of Conduct, prompting the state to begin implementation now.

The Cell Broadcast System is designed to deliver critical warnings during emergencies such as cyclones, floods, flash floods, storms, heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, gas leaks, and other disasters. Alerts will appear as pop-up messages on mobile devices and will be accompanied by a loud alarm, vibration, and in some cases, voice announcements. The warnings will be issued only by authorised government agencies during genuine emergencies.

According to ASDMA, the CBS is more reliable than traditional SMS alerts because it functions even during network congestion and reaches all users in a designated area, including visitors and roaming subscribers. The system supports multiple languages and works across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. Authorities have urged citizens to spread awareness about the new alert mechanism, particularly among elderly residents and people living in remote areas.
