Mamata Camp Raises Fresh Concerns Over EVM Security

May 3, 2026: Tensions escalated in West Bengal ahead of vote counting after Trinamool Congress workers alleged that vehicles with BJP flags were allowed inside the counting centre in Bhowanipore, where EVMs are stored. The controversy comes days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staged a sit-in outside the same centre, raising concerns about unauthorised access.

TMC workers claimed the vehicles approached the strongroom area, questioning how entry was permitted despite tight security. However, Election Commission officials dismissed the allegations, stating the vehicle was passing by and allowed to leave after routine checks. The incident adds to a growing war of nerves between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party over strongroom security.

The row follows a series of protests by TMC leaders across the state over alleged irregularities, including claims of CCTV disruptions and unauthorised activity near strongrooms—charges denied by authorities. The BJP hit back, calling the allegations baseless and accusing the ruling party of creating unnecessary controversy ahead of results.
