The Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government suspended three police officers and ordered departmental proceedings over alleged lapses
May 15, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced the suspension of three police officers over alleged lapses in the investigation into the 2024 RG Kar rape-murder case. The chief minister also confirmed that the state government would initiate departmental proceedings against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and two other officers linked to the case.
The case relates to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor whose body was found in August 2024 inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Investigators later arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in connection with the crime. The incident had sparked nationwide outrage, with doctors and healthcare workers staging protests demanding justice and improved workplace safety.
According to the chief minister, the suspended officers were accused of mishandling the investigation, allegedly attempting to offer money to the victim’s parents and conducting an unauthorised press conference related to the case. Adhikari said the departmental inquiry would be overseen by the state home secretary under the guidance of the chief secretary.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother, who recently won the Panihati Assembly seat as a BJP MLA, said her election marked an important step in her fight for justice. Recalling her visit to Nabanna for a meeting with MLAs-elect, she said the moment reminded her of the police action she faced during earlier protests connected to the case.
