BENGALURU — Commuters traveling between India’s IT hub and financial capital have reason to cheer. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that a new superfast train service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai is slated to launch by the end of June 2026.
The announcement follows a high-level meeting with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, focusing on enhancing Karnataka’s rail infrastructure and interstate connectivity.
Key Route Details
The new superfast service is designed to bridge the gap between northern and southern Karnataka while providing a faster alternative to existing long-distance trains. The train is expected to pass through several major urban and commercial centers:
- Tumakuru
- Davanagere
- Haveri
- Hubballi-Dharwad
- Belagavi
This corridor is expected to significantly benefit students, business travelers, and tourists who currently rely on lengthy rail journeys or expensive air travel.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Upgrade
In a move toward modernizing long-distance travel, the Railway Ministry has responded positively to a proposal to eventually upgrade this service to a Vande Bharat Express Sleeper.
- Next-Gen Travel: Unlike the existing chair-car Vande Bharat models, the Sleeper version is designed for overnight journeys, featuring superior aesthetics, enhanced passenger comfort, and higher speeds.
- Modern Amenities: The upgrade would bring world-class onboard facilities to one of India’s busiest transit routes.
Infrastructure and New Projects
Beyond the new train service, the meeting touched upon several critical regional projects:
- Hubballi Station Redevelopment: Plans are underway to transform Hubballi Railway Station into a modern transit hub with upgraded waiting areas and better facilities to handle increasing passenger traffic.
- New Railway Line Survey: A fresh survey has been requested for the Lokapur-Savadatti-Dharwad line, a project seen as vital for the economic growth of northern Karnataka.
- Regional Impact: The integration of these projects is expected to strengthen the transport backbone of the Hubballi-Dharwad region, a major commercial hub for the state.
Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted that these developments, shared via social media, represent a significant step in strengthening the link between Maharashtra and Karnataka while driving infrastructure growth within the state.
