The Election Commission has announced by-elections for Assembly seats in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh
July 2, 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced the schedule for by-elections to three Assembly constituencies in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Polling will be held on July 30, while the counting of votes is scheduled for August 3. The bypolls have been necessitated by the resignation, disqualification and death of sitting legislators.
The constituencies going to polls are Bankipur in Bihar, which fell vacant following the resignation of Nitin Nabin; Datia in Madhya Pradesh, where the seat became vacant after the disqualification of Rajendra Bharti; and Manjalpur in Gujarat, where the bypoll is being held following the death of MLA Yogeshbhai Narandas Patel. The Election Commission will soon issue notifications detailing the nomination process, scrutiny of papers and withdrawal of candidatures.
The by-elections are expected to be an important political contest for parties in the three states ahead of future elections. The Election Commission has directed the state election authorities to ensure smooth, free and peaceful polling, with all necessary arrangements to be put in place before voting day.
