A BJP councillor was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram after police fired warning shots to disperse a crowd resisting the execution of a KAAPA detention order

June 10, 2026: A BJP councillor from Thiruvananthapuram was arrested late Tuesday night after police carried out a Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) detention order against him. Sugathan, councillor of the Vazhottukonam ward, was taken into custody from his residence after the Kerala High Court denied him anticipatory bail in an assault case linked to a temple festival. Police said a crowd gathered at the spot and attempted to prevent the arrest, leading officers to fire warning shots into the air to disperse those present.

According to police, Sugathan and several others allegedly obstructed officers and assaulted police personnel during the operation. A fresh case has been registered against him and four others for attacking public servants and hindering official duties. Two police officers, including the Vattiyoorkavu Circle Inspector and a Sub-Inspector, reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation. Following his arrest, Sugathan underwent a medical examination before being shifted to jail.

However, Sugathan’s family rejected the police version of events and accused officers of excessive force. His wife alleged that police entered the house without women personnel, assaulted family members and frightened their children. BJP leader and Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V V Rajesh also criticised the operation, questioning the need for police firing and alleging misconduct by officers involved. The BJP has announced legal and political support for the councillor, while the incident has sparked a fresh political controversy in Kerala.
