After resigning from the Trinamool Congress and her Rajya Sabha seat, Sushmita Dev met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

June 10, 2026: Former Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Delhi on Wednesday, just hours after resigning from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and relinquishing her Rajya Sabha membership. Pictures of the meeting sparked political speculation, but Dev clarified that her primary objective is to continue her political career in Assam. She stated that she met Sarma only after formally stepping down from both the party and Parliament.

Speaking to media, Dev said she is currently not associated with any political party and that any future political move would depend on decisions taken by the parties concerned. While acknowledging her meeting with Sarma, she declined to reveal details of their discussion, saying she would speak about it at the appropriate time. She described the meeting as a courtesy interaction with someone she has known for many years.

Explaining her departure from the TMC, Dev said she did not want to remain “in two boats at the same time,” though she refrained from elaborating further on the reasons behind her exit. Her resignation comes amid growing turmoil within the TMC, following the resignation of senior leader Sukhendu Shekhar Ray and reports of dissent among several MPs and MLAs. Dev expressed gratitude to the people of West Bengal and said she now considers herself a “free woman” as she evaluates her political future.
