Counting for Haryana municipal elections continued with BJP candidates leading in key mayoral contests across Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat.
May 13, 2026: Counting of votes for the municipal corporation elections in Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat began on Wednesday morning, with the ruling BJP maintaining a strong lead in all three mayoral races. Polling for mayors and ward councillors in the three civic bodies, along with elections in Rewari municipal council and municipal committees in Sampla, Dharuhera and Uklana, was held on Sunday under tight security arrangements.
According to official trends, BJP candidates Akshita Saini in Ambala, Shyamlal Bansal in Panchkula and senior leader Rajiv Jain in Sonipat were leading against their Congress rivals. In Dharuhera, BJP candidate Satyanarayan alias Ajay Jangra defeated Independent candidate Babu Lal by 6,236 votes, while BJP’s Praveen won in Sampla by defeating Independent candidate Ankit. However, in Uklana, BJP candidate Nikita Goyal lost to Independent candidate Rima Soni by 2,806 votes.
The Haryana State Election Commission said elaborate security arrangements, including CCTV surveillance, barricading and police deployment, were in place at all counting centres to ensure a smooth and transparent process. Bypolls for several municipal wards in Tohana, Jhajjar, Rajound, Taraori, Kanina and Sadhaura were also conducted alongside the civic polls.
