Sudhir Mungantiwar urges the Maharashtra government to clarify why the resolution has not been taken up despite earlier assurances.
July 10, 2026: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar on Friday questioned the Maharashtra government over the delay in passing a resolution recommending Vinayak Damodar (VD) Savarkar for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. Raising the issue in the state assembly, Mungantiwar reminded the House that he had moved the proposal in March and that Speaker Rahul Narwekar had assured members it would be taken up at the earliest. However, the resolution did not feature during either the budget session or the ongoing monsoon session.
Mungantiwar said coming to power should not mean abandoning ideological commitments. He described Savarkar’s contribution to the freedom struggle and said the continued delay was disappointing. The BJP leader questioned whether the government’s position on the issue had changed and urged Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil to clarify the administration’s stand. He also remarked that, if the government’s ideology had shifted, he would not raise the issue again.
Responding to the concerns, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar explained that the resolution had not been listed because it was not discussed by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). He said it would not have been appropriate to place the proposal before the House without consulting floor leaders. Narwekar assured members that the matter remained important and would be discussed by the BAC during the next legislative session.
