The Centre has assured Arunachal Pradesh of full support for relief, rehabilitation and long-term flood mitigation as flash floods

July 1, 2026: The Centre on Wednesday assured Arunachal Pradesh of full support for relief, rehabilitation and long-term flood mitigation as the death toll from flash floods and landslides rose to four. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju visited the flood-affected Keyi Panyor district along with Chief Minister Pema Khandu and pledged continued assistance to restore normalcy and rebuild damaged infrastructure. Chouhan also met Governor KT Parnaik to discuss flood recovery, infrastructure restoration and support for the agriculture sector.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), continuous heavy rainfall since June 24 has affected 90,499 people across 251 villages. The disaster has left 21 people injured, while two remain missing. Several districts, including Keyi Panyor, Upper Siang, East Siang, Lower Siang and Leparada, have suffered extensive damage to roads, bridges, irrigation systems and public infrastructure. In Lower Siang, multiple villages remain cut off after roads and culverts were washed away.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the damage caused by the swollen Sibo Korong River as extensive and said the state would prepare a permanent flood protection plan in coordination with the Centre. Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by the SDRF, NDRF, Indian Air Force, district administrations and local volunteers. Officials said three of the four deaths occurred in a flash flood in Keyi Panyor, while the fourth was caused by a landslide in Anjaw district.
