The Chhattisgarh government has approved 113 handpumps and borewells in remote Pahadi Korva settlements to tackle the drinking water crisis in Surguja district.

May 7, 2026: The Surguja district administration in Chhattisgarh has decided to install 113 handpumps and borewells in remote villages inhabited by the Pahadi Korva community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). The initiative aims to improve access to drinking water in forested regions where residents currently depend on distant traditional water sources.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai recently reviewed the drinking water situation in Surguja and directed officials to take immediate steps to address the crisis. Following his instructions, Surguja Collector Ajeet Vasant ordered the completion of all projects within one month using District Mineral Foundation funds.

The planned installations will cover several development blocks, including Lundra, Lakhanpur, Sitapur, Mainpat and Ambikapur. Officials said the move is expected to provide long-term relief to thousands of tribal residents living in remote and forested settlements across the district.
