A boat carrying 14 passengers overturned in the Ganga river in Bihar’s Samastipur district during strong winds, leaving at least three dead and several missing.
May 29, 2026: At least three people lost their lives and four others remain missing after a boat carrying 14 passengers capsized in the Ganga in Samastipur district on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 5:45 am, and rescue teams managed to save seven passengers while continuing search operations for the missing individuals till late evening.
According to officials, all passengers were residents of Masoomganj Bind Toli in Patna district and had travelled to Sultanpur Diara in Mohiuddin Nagar for agricultural work. They were reportedly returning with vegetables from parwal fields when the accident took place near Umanath Ghat. Authorities said strong winds caused the small motorised dinghy to lose balance after its engine malfunctioned.
Rescue efforts are being jointly carried out by teams from Patna and Samastipur administrations along with local divers, the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force. Officials confirmed that three bodies, including that of a woman, had been recovered while search operations continued for the remaining missing passengers.
