Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will inaugurate development projects, launch a ₹1,700-crore footwear manufacturing unit
July 9, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will visit Karur on Friday for his first official government programme in the district since assuming office. During the visit, he will inaugurate several development initiatives, attend a government function at the District Collectorate and lay the foundation stone for Evervan Kothari Footwear Private Limited’s non-leather footwear manufacturing plant. The ₹1,700-crore project is expected to generate employment for nearly 13,500 people, making it one of the state’s major industrial investments.
The Chief Minister will also distribute compassionate appointment orders to 32 individuals from families affected by the tragic stampede during a TVK campaign rally in September last year, which claimed 41 lives. As part of the government’s relief measures, eligible family members will receive government jobs. Vijay is expected to meet the affected families personally before addressing a public gathering later in the day.
The visit has sparked political reactions, with the BJP alleging that the announcement of the appointments carries political motives, while welcoming the relief extended to the victims’ families. Meanwhile, authorities have deployed over 5,000 police personnel to manage security, traffic and crowd control. Attendance at the public event has been restricted to around 5,000 people through QR code-based entry passes, with emergency response measures also put in place.
