Temperatures cross 40°C in parts of Kerala; authorities suspend student activities and issue safety guidelines
April 23, 2026: The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in parts of Kerala, warning of soaring temperatures and high humidity. Districts such as Palakkad, Kollam, and Thrissur are expected to witness temperatures touching 40–41°C, significantly above normal levels. Several other districts are also likely to experience temperatures between 36°C and 38°C through April 26, along with hot and humid conditions.
In response, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued strict guidelines, including the suspension of vacation classes, camps, and student activities across schools. Authorities have advised institutions to ensure safety measures such as proper ventilation, drinking water, and sanitation for essential activities. Communication channels like WhatsApp groups and the KITE Victers platform are being used to spread awareness about heat-related precautions.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged people to exercise extreme caution, recommending avoidance of direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm, describing it as a “self-lockdown” period. He advised residents to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and minimise outdoor activity, while also calling for community efforts to provide drinking water and shade. Authorities warned that heat-related illnesses could pose serious health risks, urging immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.
