Congress urged the Supreme Court to safeguard free and fair elections, raising concerns over the electoral roll revision process

July 3, 2026: The Congress on Friday alleged that electoral democracy in India is facing its “gravest threat” under the current government and urged the Supreme Court to take urgent steps to safeguard the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal shared the party’s position in a post on X while releasing a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) by 23 opposition parties and an Independent MP.

According to Venugopal, the letter, sent on June 28, raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the alleged partisan role of the Election Commission of India (ECI), and other election-related issues. He said the judiciary has a constitutional responsibility to ensure that elections remain free, fair and transparent, and to protect democratic institutions from executive overreach.

The Congress leader stressed that public confidence in the electoral process must be restored and called on the Supreme Court to take decisive action. He said the opposition had made the letter public in the interest of transparency and expressed hope that the apex court would take necessary steps to strengthen accountability and uphold the integrity of India’s democratic process.
