At least 50 people fell ill and several were hospitalised in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area after sewage reportedly mixed

June 4, 2026: A health scare unfolded in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area after contaminated drinking water allegedly caused diarrhoea and vomiting among residents. Officials said a leaking pipeline allowed sewage to mix with the Narmada water supply, affecting multiple housing societies. At least 50 people reportedly fell ill, while seven remained hospitalised as of Thursday.

The incident prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to review the situation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and local authorities. Health teams were deployed across the affected areas, conducting door-to-door surveys, distributing chlorine tablets and collecting water samples for testing. Officials said emergency measures were being carried out to repair the damaged pipeline and prevent further contamination.

According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the situation is now under control, with most patients receiving treatment and being discharged. However, residents claimed the scale of the outbreak was much larger, with some alleging that hundreds of people had fallen sick. Authorities continue to monitor the area while investigating the cause of the contamination and assessing water safety standards.
