A massive landslide near Meenakshi Bridge in Kerala’s Wayanad district killed two people, injured several others

July 7, 2026: At least two people were killed and seven others injured after a major landslide struck Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday. The mudslide occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, where excavation work was underway for a tunnel road project connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad. Dramatic videos circulating on social media captured the moment a huge mound of mud collapsed, uprooting trees, destroying construction barricades and sweeping away a truck and a bus as people ran to safety.

CCTV footage from the area also showed pedestrians fleeing moments before the landslide engulfed the road. Initial reports indicated that local residents rescued at least three people before emergency teams arrived. Police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) launched rescue operations amid fears that several people remained trapped under the debris.

Authorities said at least seven people are missing, while rescue efforts are continuing. Health Minister K Muraleedharan confirmed the two fatalities and said hospitals across Wayanad had been instructed to provide treatment to the injured, many of whom were migrant labourers working at the project site. Officials added that no local residents were believed to have been affected as search and clearance operations continue.
