VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan said the party’s support for the TVK-led government is based on secular principles

July 6, 2026: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has defended his party’s decision to support the TVK-led government, saying the move was guided by principles rather than a desire for political positions. Speaking at a VCK awards ceremony in Chennai, he said the party had criticised TVK during the election campaign and therefore could not have immediately celebrated its victory or aligned with it for political gain. He also dismissed claims that the VCK had sought the deputy chief minister’s post or any other office in exchange for its support.

Thirumavalavan said the VCK had previously raised concerns about TVK, including allegations that it was influenced by the RSS. However, he claimed the party reassessed its position after the elections when Chief Minister Vijay chose to seek the support of parties identified with secular politics instead of forming the government with the AIADMK and its allies. Calling the decision courageous, he said the VCK believed it was its responsibility to support such a political stand and expressed confidence that the TVK government would complete its full five-year term.

Clarifying the VCK’s political position, Thirumavalavan said the DMK, not the VCK, had announced that the party was no longer part of the DMK-led alliance. He stressed that the VCK had neither formally exited the alliance nor officially joined a TVK-led front, adding that coalition discussions were still underway and no final decision had been taken. He also argued that the DMK had effectively signalled the end of ties by inducting a VCK functionary into its ranks, questioning why his party was being blamed for the political developments.
