July 6, 2026: A 35-year-old senior resident doctor was found dead inside a locked duty room at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Delhi’s Civil Lines area, prompting a police investigation. Dr Simarpreet Singh Anand, a senior resident in the Department of Anaesthesia, was discovered unconscious in Duty Room No. 109 after hospital staff broke open the locked door on the morning of July 5. He was rushed to the emergency department, where doctors declared him dead. Dr Anand, a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, had been serving at the hospital for the past three years and was on night duty when the incident occurred.

During the investigation, police found that a cannula had been inserted into Dr Anand’s left hand at his request around 10 p.m. on July 4. A district crime team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examined the scene and recovered syringes, empty medicine vials, a handwritten note and a diary from a black bag inside the room. The recovered materials have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police said the contents of the handwritten note and other evidence are being examined. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to be conducted by a medical board. Officials said no conclusions have been drawn regarding the cause or circumstances of the doctor’s death, and the investigation will continue based on forensic findings, the autopsy report and other evidence.
