Punjab Police withdraws security cover of Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh after his switch from AAP to BJP
April 26, 2026: The Punjab Police has reportedly withdrawn the security cover of Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh following his recent shift from the Aam Aadmi Party to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sources said the security detail, comprising around 9–10 personnel stationed at his residence in Jalandhar’s Chhotti Baradari area, was removed on Saturday. However, Central Reserve Police Force personnel were later seen deployed outside his home.
The development comes amid political upheaval after several AAP leaders, including Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, announced their exit from the party and joined the BJP along with other MPs such as Ashok Mittal, Rajinder Gupta, Swati Maliwal, and Vikramjit Sahney. The mass defection has triggered strong reactions from party workers and supporters.
Protests erupted in parts of Punjab, with AAP workers staging demonstrations outside the residences of some leaders who switched sides. In Ludhiana and Jalandhar, slogans were raised and the word “Gaddar” was spray-painted on boundary walls of certain homes, reflecting public anger over the political shift. The situation remains tense as political tensions continue to escalate in the state.
