May 12, 2026: A high-level meeting to select the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is scheduled to take place today at 7 PM at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. The meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Chief Justice of India, who together form the committee responsible for appointing the head of India’s premier investigative agency.
The selection panel is expected to evaluate several senior IPS officers from different cadres based on their experience, service records and investigative background. The appointment of the CBI Director is considered a crucial decision because the agency handles several high-profile and politically sensitive cases across the country.
The participation of the opposition leader and the Chief Justice is aimed at ensuring transparency and balance in the appointment process. Sources said the committee will review the suitability of shortlisted officers before taking a final decision.
