July 2, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday unveiled a series of strategic initiatives spanning defence, technology, clean energy and mobility after holding the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi. Addressing a joint press statement, Modi said the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership was entering a new phase based on mutual trust and deeper cooperation across key sectors. He also welcomed Takaichi on her first official visit to India as Japan’s Prime Minister.

A major highlight of the summit was the signing of the first India-Japan defence co-development project, aimed at jointly developing defence technologies to strengthen regional peace, maritime security and a rules-based Indo-Pacific. The two leaders also announced a roadmap for cooperation in semiconductors, quantum technologies and resilient supply chains, while launching initiatives to expand collaboration in batteries, green hydrogen, nuclear energy, biogas and next-generation mobility.

Modi said nearly 120 new business agreements worth around USD 10 billion had been signed over the past year, reaffirming the shared goal of attracting 10 trillion yen in Japanese investment over the next decade. Both countries reiterated their commitment to economic security, clean energy transition and a free and open Indo-Pacific. The summit was attended by senior officials from both sides, while Takaichi is on a three-day official visit to India from July 1 to 3.
