CEPA Talks Gain Momentum as Ottawa Eyes 2026 Deadline
May 3, 2026: The recent free trade agreement between India and New Zealand is being seen as a potential model for Canada as it pushes to finalise a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with New Delhi by 2026. Analysts from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada noted that the deal demonstrates how stalled negotiations can be revived and concluded swiftly, as seen when India and New Zealand wrapped up talks within nine months after relaunching them.
Experts believe the agreement offers key lessons for Canada, particularly in adopting a flexible approach. Ritesh Malik said the New Zealand deal acts as an “instruction manual,” highlighting the importance of compromise and goodwill in accelerating negotiations. However, challenges such as agriculture and labour mobility are expected to remain sticking points in the Canada-India talks.
High-level political engagement is likely to play a crucial role in pushing the CEPA forward. Leaders including Narendra Modi and Mark Carney have set an ambitious target to conclude the agreement and boost bilateral trade significantly by 2030. Upcoming ministerial visits and business delegations are expected to further strengthen momentum in negotiations.
