IndiGo flight evacuated after onboard device catches fire; DGCA rules on power banks highlighted.
May 5, 2026: An emergency evacuation was carried out at Chandigarh Airport after a power bank caught fire on an IndiGo flight arriving from Hyderabad. The incident occurred after landing, prompting swift action by the crew, who evacuated all passengers safely onto the tarmac. Authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control, though a few passengers reportedly sustained minor injuries and were taken for medical care.
The airline stated that the fire originated from a passenger’s personal electronic device, leading to smoke inside the cabin. Emergency protocols were immediately activated, and all passengers were escorted to safety while the aircraft was isolated for inspection. Officials emphasised that safety procedures were followed promptly to prevent escalation.
The incident has also drawn attention to updated 2026 guidelines by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which prohibit the use of power banks during flights and restrict their storage in overhead compartments. These rules aim to reduce fire risks and ensure quicker detection of such hazards onboard.
