Despite disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz following regional tensions, the Indian government says fuel supplies remain stable

June 7, 2026: The escalation of tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel has sparked concerns over global energy supplies, particularly after restrictions were imposed around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas trade. As India relies heavily on the waterway for crude oil and LPG imports, fears of supply disruptions emerged. However, officials have maintained that energy imports continue to flow and domestic fuel availability remains secure.

According to government data, between 36 and 38 Indian-flagged commercial ships were operating in or near the Gulf region when tensions escalated. Many of these vessels were carrying cargo linked to India’s energy and trade requirements. Since mid-March, around 23 to 25 Indian ships have reportedly navigated safely out of the affected area, while authorities continue efforts to ensure the safe movement of the remaining vessels near Gulf waters.

The Petroleum Ministry has assured consumers that LPG supplies remain unaffected despite the regional uncertainty. Domestic refineries have increased production and are operating at near full capacity, helping meet a significant share of the country’s demand. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said there is no shortage of cooking gas cylinders and urged people not to panic, adding that the government is closely monitoring the situation to protect India’s energy security.
