Income Tax Department conducts searches linked to Debashis Kumar amid ongoing probe and election heat

April 17, 2026: The Income Tax Department carried out searches at multiple locations linked to Debashis Kumar, a candidate from the Rashbehari Assembly constituency, just days ahead of key elections. Raids were conducted early in the morning at his residence on Manoharpukur Road and his election office, intensifying scrutiny in an alleged financial irregularities case. The action has added fresh political tension in the constituency during a crucial campaign period.

The searches follow an ongoing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, which had earlier summoned Kumar multiple times in a money laundering case linked to alleged land-related fraud. Investigators are examining whether he misused his position in the Kolkata Municipal administration to facilitate questionable transactions. The probe reportedly gained momentum after raids on businessman Amit Gangopadhyay, accused of orchestrating fraudulent land deals.

According to sources, authorities are now analysing land documents and digital evidence, including chat records, to establish possible links. The raids have sparked political reactions, with supporters of the All India Trinamool Congress staging protests and alleging political targeting. The development has turned into a flashpoint ahead of elections, further intensifying the political contest in the region.
