The Jammu and Kashmir government has constituted a five-member committee to investigate the technical malfunction
June 10, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir government has set up a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the technical failure of the Gulmarg Gondola service that occurred on May 25. The General Administration Department (GAD) appointed Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited Managing Director Mahmood Shah as the chairman of the panel, which has been directed to submit its findings within 10 days.
The inquiry follows a major incident in which more than 300 tourists and local guides were stranded mid-air after the popular cable car system developed a technical snag. A large-scale rescue operation involving the Army, Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) successfully evacuated all those affected.
The committee has been tasked with determining the exact sequence of events that led to the malfunction. It will examine technical failures, maintenance records, operational procedures, inspection mechanisms, and safety protocols. The panel will also identify any negligence or procedural lapses, fix responsibility where required, and recommend both immediate corrective measures and long-term reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
