Authorities have temporarily suspended the Kedarnath Yatra after heavy rain, snowfall

May 31, 2026: The Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended due to severe weather conditions in Uttarakhand. Continuous rainfall, heavy snowfall, and poor visibility in the region prompted authorities to halt the pilgrimage as a precautionary measure. Officials also reported that three pilgrims lost their lives on Saturday during the ongoing yatra.

Following an Orange Alert issued by the weather department, authorities instructed pilgrims to remain at designated safe locations and avoid moving towards the shrine until conditions improve. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in Rudraprayag stated that the pilgrimage will resume only after receiving clearance from meteorological officials and confirming that the route is safe for travel.

Visuals from the region showed snowfall, rain, and challenging conditions along the pilgrimage route. Disaster management teams have been placed on alert and are prepared to assist stranded pilgrims if necessary. The sudden weather deterioration comes shortly after several northern states experienced intense heatwave conditions, highlighting the dramatic shift in weather across the Himalayan region.
