Abhishek Banerjee thanked Rahul Gandhi for his support after an alleged attack in Sonarpur, while both leaders condemned political violence
May 31, 2026: Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday thanked Rahul Gandhi for extending support after he was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal. Banerjee sustained minor injuries after stones and eggs were reportedly thrown at him while he was meeting families affected by alleged post-poll violence. Videos from the scene showed a chaotic situation, with protesters confronting the TMC leader amid loud sloganeering.
Reacting to the incident, Banerjee described it as an example of political violence and “state-sponsored terrorism.” In a post on social media, he expressed gratitude to Rahul Gandhi for standing by him and said that democratic institutions and constitutional values must be protected. He also accused the BJP of targeting political opponents and claimed that those who challenge the ruling party face intimidation and hostility.
Rahul Gandhi strongly condemned the attack, calling it an assault on democracy and the people represented by an elected Member of Parliament. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee said Gandhi personally contacted her and offered assistance if further medical treatment was required for Abhishek Banerjee. The incident has intensified the political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with both sides trading accusations over the violence.
