May 18, 2026: The newly formed United Democratic Front government in Kerala has announced free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses. The decision was taken during the first Cabinet meeting held after the new government assumed office.
Apart from the free bus travel scheme, the Cabinet also approved the creation of a dedicated department for elderly citizens. The government said the new department would focus on welfare measures, support systems and policies aimed at improving the quality of life of senior citizens in the state.
The announcements are being seen as the first major welfare initiatives of the new administration. The government indicated that more people-centric schemes and reforms are expected to be introduced in the coming months.
