A district consumer commission in Kerala fined KSRTC for denying a seat to a medically unfit passenger and failing to drop him at his designated stop.
April 26, 2026: A district consumer commission in Malappuram has fined Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ₹30,000 for deficiency in service after an ailing passenger was denied a seat and not dropped at his designated stop. The action followed a complaint by Mohammed Zainudheen Kormath, who was travelling from Amballur in Thrissur to Kolappuram.
According to the complaint, the passenger initially boarded a crowded bus and informed the conductor about his medical condition, after which he was assured a seat would be available later. When seats became vacant at Thrissur, he occupied one, but was later asked to vacate it after another passenger claimed it was reserved. With no alternative seat available, he was forced to continue the journey standing despite his health condition.
The commission also noted that the passenger was not dropped at his intended stop, Kakkad, and had to get down at Kooriyad instead, causing further inconvenience. Observing lapses in communication and service, the panel directed KSRTC to pay ₹25,000 as compensation and ₹5,000 as litigation costs within 45 days, failing which interest would apply.
