NDRF teams deployed as rescue operations continue amid safety concerns
February 6, 2026: At least 18 workers were killed after a powerful explosion ripped through an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya, triggering a major rescue operation. The blast caused extensive damage inside the mine, trapping several labourers under debris. Authorities said rescue efforts are ongoing, with fears that more workers could still be stuck inside the collapsed sections of the mine.
Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the site and are working under difficult conditions alongside local administration, police and disaster management personnel. The Central government has assured the Meghalaya government of full support, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant touch with state authorities.
An ex-gratia compensation of ₹3 lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased workers. The incident has once again brought focus on the dangers of illegal coal mining in the region, raising serious concerns over worker safety, enforcement of mining regulations and the continued risks faced by labourers operating in unauthorised mines.
